Activating the surface

I activate the surface before I ever start painting. It's a great way to loosen up and
destroy the fear of a blank substrate. Also, by veiling with glazed colors, some
of these marks remain creating interest. Love this process.

Newest work in progress - abstract painting

Work in progress - 30 x 30 x 1.5 canvas

I'm trying hard to begin working on a painting with no preconceived ideas but still utilizing
the rules of good composition. I do so love random marks in paintings that create a sense
of movement and excitement for me and the viewers. I've been inspired by listening to Nancy Hillis
who is an existential psychiatrist and artist. It's about remaining free and letting go
of the fear of 'messing it up'. Adding and subtracting to achieve this.

It's not easy for me to paint large. I must be seated due to the progression of a lifelong disability and
I have to take many breaks. But on the plus side, I don't have to be tight. I hold brushes
differently in order to stay loose and it reduces limb fatigue. We'll see how this piece
progresses. I do like the purple very much.
