It can be a challenge to enlarge a favorite small format image onto a bigger substrate.
Here the 8x8" canvas had some texture from crafted acrylic tissue paper collage pieces. I was able to skim paint across those hills and valleys and leave a nice abstract image with ease. The larger 30x30 canvas had virtually no texture like that so I'm using a palette knife and loose strokes to create some visual texture. I think it's working. This has an appx 1/2" white border for a total width of 15x22 watercolor paper. Painted intuitively with juicy acrylics using a silicone spreader - no brush marks. The new tools in my toolbox. MELODY CLEARY - CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS Working on this painting I began with the warmish colors of fall and then later the addition of the blue and bluish white conjured a feeling of winter frost and ice. MELODY CLEARY - CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE, NATURE AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS. PACIFIC NORTHWEST ARTIST During the process, I sometimes use a mat to find more pleasing compositions within the larger work. These three are examples from today's session. MELODY CLEARY - CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE, NATURE, AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS I haven't posted since January! I've been working on this new 'journey' I've been on and am loving what I'm learning! Here is a 24 x 30 inch canvas which shows the lighter palettes I'm working with. And the mark making - so exciting! This piece now hangs in a collector's home. Lucky me!
Unknown Territory (sold) by Melody Cleary 2018 I haven't posted since October due to neck/arm issues again....and well, the holidays when I get little art accomplished. November began with me joining artist Nancy Hillis' Studio Journey online workshop to help keep my hand in in a small way. It's all about ABSTRACTS!! Each month we are given her 'bundle' or talks, demos, and study exercises focusing on working loose and unplanned....intuitively. And making your own unique marks....love the mark making. Good for me that one can go at their own pace. Here are some examples of my experimentation. So bear with me while I continue pacing myself and experimenting. Comments on my studies above are welcome.
MELODY CLEARY - CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE, NATURE AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS You can see that I eliminated large black areas since my last post of this piece. However, I left random
black marks to retain the abstracted quality and also to help the eyes move around. At the top, there's now a calm place for the eyes to rest. Definitely is more light and airy now. I have completed a companion piece, both 30x30 on canvas. I have submitted these images to a designer for her client's consideration. MELODY CLEARY - CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE, NATURE AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS AND PRINTS This is the progress I've made since my previous post. I'm pausing to consider the finishing strokes, but
it's almost there. Comments welcome. 30 x 30 x 1.5 acrylic on canvas. To browse available images in print, go here. MELODY CLEARY - CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE, NATURE AND ABSTRACT PAINTINGS AND PRINTS |
